KATSEYE the group formed through HYBE and Geffen’s groundbreaking The Debut: Dream Academy in 2023, these six talented young women have captured hearts worldwide with their fresh global sound and undeniable bond. But ever since Manon Bannerman stepped away on February 20 for what the label described as a health-focused break, the conversation has taken some complicated turns.
I’ve followed these girls since the survival show days, staying up late to cheer them on as they navigated intense training and cultural adjustments. Seeing them promote as a five-piece now hits different. Sophia Laforteza, the group’s leader, recently set the record straight in a candid chat: “This was never about race. We’ve always had each other’s backs through everything.” Lara Raj echoed that warmth, calling their shared space “the safest, most loving environment we’ve ever known. Manon is family, full stop.” The group has kept in light touch with Manon, who’s been turning heads at Paris Fashion Week events like Jacquemus’ “Le Bonheur” show.
She won’t join the next EP or upcoming tour, which has left Eyekons KATSEYE’s dedicated fanbase divided. Some celebrate her fashion pivot as a bold personal chapter, while others dig deeper into old clips and social likes, wondering if industry pressures played a bigger role.
To get a clearer picture, I reached out to, a music sociologist who’s studied diversity in global pop acts for over a decade. “Hiatuses in these hyper-visible groups often blend personal wellbeing with systemic challenges,” she told me. “Manon’s experience highlights how Black women in predominantly non-Black ensembles still face extra scrutiny. But KATSEYE’s emphasis on ongoing support and an open door shows maturity many labels lack.”
A former A&R executive turned consultant, added his take: “From what I’ve seen in similar HYBE projects, health breaks are genuine more often than not. The real test is how the group evolves creatively without one member. KATSEYE has real staying power they’re not defined by any single narrative.”
